Mike Cannon-Brookes: Reflecting on Regret

Mike Cannon-Brookes, co-founder and co-CEO of Atlassian, is renowned for his success in the tech industry and his advocacy for renewable energy. However, even the most accomplished individuals have moments of regret. Recently, Cannon-Brookes publicly expressed his regret over a decision he made early in his career—a decision he believes did not align with his values and the direction he ultimately wanted to take.

In an interview, Cannon-Brookes revealed that he regrets endorsing a particular project management tool that, in retrospect, he feels contributed to a culture of overwork and burnout in the tech industry. “At the time, we were excited about the potential for increased productivity and efficiency,” he said. “But looking back, I realize that the tool didn’t take into account the human element, leading to an environment where employees felt pressured to constantly overdeliver.”
